Q

How does acupuncture work?

A

Concerning the typical acupuncture theory, our body has an energy passing within it. That energy is considered to be something named Qi. This powerful Qi has crucial states such as the physical, emotional, mental and the spiritual disposition of a persons life. An individuals' well-being is lead by the flow of Qi. When that stream of Qi is weak, off balance or interrupted, the body becomes agitated and health issues may develop. Acupuncture is used to restore the balance.

Q

What's the typical treatment?

A

The patient fills out a questionnaire regarding health history and main complaints. Then a thorough interview and examination is conducted to help identify any underlying energetic disturbances, i.e. pulled muscle or digestive problems and to determine the cause of imbalance. The treatment lasts for thirty to forty-five minutes.

Q

How many treatments do I need until I feel better?

A

Since everybody is different, that will be determined after the initial consult.

Q

Does the treatment hurt?

A

Insertion of needles most often goes unnoticed by many patients. There may be slight stinging or burning sensation at the time of needle insertion if there is some kind of blockage, but usually that will go away very quickly. Relaxation and an elevation of spirit accompany the treatment.

Q

Do acupuncture treatments get covered or reimbursed by my health insurance?

A

There are many insurance companies that do offer coverage for treatments in or out of network. Unfortunately Medicare and Medicaid do not offer coverage. Oxford also doesn't offer coverage for NY state residents as of 2014. The best way to find out is to call the insurance company and find out whether acupuncture is covered.
